Building a Stronger Community: Youth Mental Health First Aid Training Success

Peninsula School District is proud to announce the successful start of the Youth Mental Health First Aid certification program last night, Nov. 19. The first session, held at Key Peninsula Middle School, brought together 20 dedicated participants from across our community, including district staff, parents, and local community members.

"This training represents our commitment to supporting youth across our district," shared Rebecca Maffei, PSD Lead Counselor, who facilitated the training alongside Dianna Sullivan with the Boys & Girls Club. “Having a trusted adult to turn to when facing a crisis is essential for our children, who are facing mental health issues at a higher rate than ever.”

The comprehensive two-day program equips participants with essential skills to recognize and respond to mental health challenges among young people.

Participants are learning to:
  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of youth mental health challenges
  • Understand crisis intervention techniques
  • Connect young people with appropriate support resources
  • Implement the ALGEE action plan for mental health response

Making the training accessible to all, the Boys & Girls Club partnered with us to provide Youth Game Night activities for children ages 6-18 during the training sessions. Dinner was provided for all participants, creating a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Due to the overwhelming response to our November sessions, we're excited to announce that additional training opportunities will be available in January 2025. This upcoming training will continue our mission of building a community well-equipped to support youth mental health needs.

Registration details for the January sessions will be announced soon. These trainings are open to:
  • School district staff
  • Parents and guardians
  • Community members who work with youth
  • Any caring adults interested in supporting young people's mental health

Stay tuned to our district website and communications for upcoming registration information. Together, we're building a stronger, more supportive community for our youth.
